How many steps a day does an average Australian walk? A recent survey revealed that the average Australian walks approximately 7,400 steps every single day. A lot of us wished we walked a lot more than we do! Where did that idea come from anyway…..well as a matter of fact the recommended 10,000 steps a day originated in Japan in the early 1960’s. Japanese researchers led by Dr Yoshiro Hatano determined that the average person took 3,500 to 5,000 steps per day, and that if they were to increase their steps to 10,000 steps per day, the result would be healthier, thinner people! Who doesn’t want to be healthier or thinner or happier for that matter. This group worked out that if we walked about 10,000 steps a day to burn, we would burn about 20% of our caloric intake.
